The exam does not seek to assess a specific topic but is intended to measure analytical skills. The sections of the exam (Argumentative Writing, Integrated Reasoning, Quantitative and Verbal) measure logical mathematical reasoning abilities and critical thinking abilities, for example, evaluating analytical, judgment, and problem-solving ability. In this exam you will not be able to use a calculator.

Like the GRE, two sections of the GMAT are adaptive, this means that when you answer a question, an internal algorithm decides which question will come out next, based on the previous answers. The score also takes into account the difficulty of the questions and the number of correct questions.

Finally, the GMAT can be taken more than once, it can be taken every 16 days, up to 5 times in a one-year period, and 8 times in total.
